I'm a former active-duty officer with the Coast Guard now serving as a Biblical counselor and adult sleep consultant. My insomnia started early in my military career, which was worsened by regular shift work; I was perpetually exhausted and dreaded bedtime, so reclaiming sleep became my fixation.
I researched everything I could get my hands on, stopped drinking coffee, bought products I thought would be the "magical fix", and even did a weeklong "sleep reset" - you name it, I probaly tried it. A sleep study eventually led to a sleep apnea diaognosis, but even the CPAP didn’t resolve my insomnia.
I then hit rock bottom after a week of barely sleeping, and entered the new year ready to do whatever it took to finally sleep. I re-evaluated my evening routines and overall sleep hygiene, met with a nutritionist, got a dental appliance to replace the CPAP, and underwent Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for my insomina. With a holistic approach and consistency, I finally had results!
I realized I had been relying too heavily on finding a single, "perfect", overnight fix when a holistic plan that addressed my daily routines, nutrition, mental health, and even medical health, implemented over time, was actually the best way forward.
I know firsthand how insomnia affects every part of life and how hard it is to make changes when you’re exhausted. I also know how helpful it is to have someone in your corner as you make those changes!
